Bracketology - Final Selection Sunday Prediction

We're finally here! Soon, the final bracket will be revealed, and I for one am ecstatic. After the weirdness of last season, having a normal March has been a breath of fresh air. Soon, we will have match-ups to predict, Cinderellas to love, and a titanic Final Four.

For these final predictions, I had several difficult choices to make. Ultimately, I went with metrics over resume if I had a toss-up, as the committee has shown they will make more decisions seeding wise by a team's metrics. We'll find out soon enough, let the madness begin!

Conference championship Saturday is upon us, and it's truly the best non-NCAA tourney day on the calendar. All day, we will see teams fighting for their lives and playing their best basketball. Today will set the foundations for next week, and I for one am very excited.

Bracketology - 3/11/22

As the action heats, you'll find that teams that had positive resumes before start to diminish in value. The reason why is that some resumes look good on paper, but often have superficial numbers. If those resumes take one bad loss, they all of a sudden look much uglier. This is why teams like Xavier and Notre Dame, teams that had been positively viewed all season, are all of a sudden very much staring down the bubble. They will be rooting hard against bid thieves tonight, and the rest of the weekend.

Bracketology - 3/7/22

It's conference tournament season! From here on out, every game will be a post-season game. This week will set up the foundations for the NCAA tournament, and you will see some of the best basketball of the year.

Beware the commentators that say "with a win, they're in!" These commentators are the same types that think the tournament expanded to 128 teams. These games do not occur in a vacuum, and often one game is not enough to move the needle. There are exceptions, but they are few and far between. For now, we enjoy the basketball this week, and wait for the dust to settle in 6 days.

Bracketology - 3/4/22

As we head into the home stretch of the season, one oft-heard complaint about some tournament teams is that "they didn't even go .500 in their conference."

You see, several college analysts (including a couple famous bracketologists) believe that if a team can't even finish .500 in their conference, they should not be allowed in the field. Other numbers and wins be darned, if they can't reach that arbitrary criteria, they're out.

It's well intentioned (wanting more mid-majors), but foolish.

You see, in the era of unbalanced scheduling, teams in the same conference can have vastly different schedule strengths. One team can be 9-9 by feasting on the bottom of the conference, while another is 8-10 having to play stronger competition. Does conference record determine who's better? Not really.

Take LSU. They're 17 in the NET, have Top 20 metrics, and have beaten Kentucky and Tennessee. I have them as a 6 seed. But they're 8-9 in conference, so by some people's definition, they should be excluded.

That's silly. Conference record helps with conference tournament seeding, but aside from that means nothing. The criteria should just be the best teams in the country, and then go from there.

Bracketology - 2/28/22

March is tomorrow. But I figured you already knew that.

What a wild day Saturday was. 6 of the top 7 seeds lost on Saturday, all on the road. It was the first time ever that every team in the AP Top 6 lost. The big winner was Baylor. They showed they could overcome the loss of JTT by beating Kansas. With 11 Q1 wins and Top 4 metrics, Baylor is now a surefire 1 seed. They honestly could jump to the #2 overall seed with another good week and an Arizona loss. But there are still two weeks to play, there's plenty of action left.

Bracketology - 2/25/22

This year I believe highlights how different things have become with the shifting from the RPI to the NET. With the RPI, it was very difficult to move up multiple spots with one game, due to the amount of emphasis placed on a schedule. In the NET, however, the emphasis placed on efficiency margins means it is very possible for a team to drastically improve their rating with one blowout win. This is especially helpful for mid-majors, who in the RPI days found their ranking to be difficult to raise up. For example, Loyola smothered Evansville by 51, and saw their NET rise 10 spots, giving their at-large case more legitimacy. It will be interesting to see what teams take advantage of this in the last two weeks, as every game matters.

Bracketology - 2/21/22

The Top 16 was revealed on Saturday, giving better insight on what the committee is looking for. It appears that the value of wins are king, as many teams saw their seeding improve based off beating top-tier teams. There is also a strong value placed on the metrics, though not to the point that it trumps wins. It will be interesting to see how the teams near the bottom are seeded, given many of them have great wins and questionable losses. These teams will have a chance to play their way off the bubble the next couple weeks, and many will, one way or the other.

Also, as we go down to the last few weeks, check http://www.bracketmatrix.com/ for more great brackets.

Bracketology 2/18/2022

While it's true that one game doesn't mean a whole lot for the resume, a string of positive games sure does. Take Rutgers. Two weeks ago they weren't on the radar, with a nice home win over Purdue but also a Q4 home loss to Lafayette to go with two Q3 losses. Four straight wins over ranked teams later, they are now in the field with some breathing room. Ultimately, beating good teams is what the committee is looking for, and Rutgers deserves credit for being a bubble team that has taken that to heart.

Bracketology 2/11/2022

This was quite a wild week of college basketball. Six Top 10 teams fell, and several teams found themselves teetering on edge of defeat. Despite this, one game rarely makes a sizable impact on a team's seeding.

Bracketology is not a power ranking. Recent results do not carry more weight, all games are weighted equally for a team. As such, teams won't go flying up and down the list, but remain fairly steady. If a team sees a drastic jump, it means I have changed my evaluation of a team and adjusted accordingly (like Arizona).
