Bracketology - 3/9/2026

As conference tournaments hit full swing, there will be movement on the seed list, but less so than you would imagine.

Conference tournaments are not final exams. They don't count for 25% of the resume. They are normal tests, with each game having the same value as a game in November.

So when an overexcited commentator declares a team is tourney bound based on one game, don't place too much stock in that. Conference tourneys are just a delicious appetizer before the main course coming soon.

Bracketology - 3/2/2026

 If you're reading this, you already know what month it is, so I'll spare you the details, you know the excitement.

Few things are consistent in March, but one is the bubble. As in, the bubble is always weak, and the teams on it lose games they shouldn't. This year is no exception.

With the exception of 2024 (which had all the bid thieves), the bubble is always filled with teams that had their opportunities to establish their place in the field, but did not utilize them due to being mediocre teams. These teams know the stakes, but often cannot get out of their own way.

Take Auburn, for example. Auburn has a great schedule, solid metrics, and a fantastic road win at Florida. They're also 15-14, and have lost 7 of their last 8. The number of losses does matter at some point, and several teams will play their way off the bubble just by virtue of losing too much. Thems the breaks.

And, unsurprisingly, I think Miami (OH) should get in over the bubble, provided they don't bottom out.

Bracketology - 2/23/2026

On Saturday, the NCAA committee revealed who the Top 16 teams in the field are with three weeks remaining in the season. While things will change, there are a few items to muse upon:

A. The value of head to head
When the bracket was revealed on Saturday, Iowa State was ahead of Houston in the rankings, which was a slight surprise. In the metrics used to rank the teams, Houston was ahead of Iowa St in all of them. But the Cyclones own the head to head win over the Cougars, rallying from a 10 point deficit in the last 7 minutes to win 70-67. Both teams lost on Saturday, so we will see what circumstances will cause the head to head to hold. But it makes a difference after this past Saturday, with Michigan ahead of Duke in most rankings but the Blue Devils holding the head to head win on a neutral court.

B. The lack of one consistent metric over the rankings
Something the NCAA has been very transparent about over the past decade is that the criteria used to separate teams changes from team to team. The committee "scrubs" its rankings, comparing Team A to Team B if they're right next to each other, and use whatever metric it is to determine who's better. So utilizing one metric to determine who the NCAA seeds will be is a fool's errand.

C. No injury factor - not yet, at least
Kansas has had the most attention upon them in terms of player availability, with Darryn Peterson's status and minutes looming large in Lawrence every game. The committee, rather than try to parse out the weight of every Kansas game, has instead seeded them according to their resume, which on Saturday was 10th overall (though the home loss to Cincinnati does change that). The same went for Texas Tech, who were seeded at their expected spot of 13th overall even with JT Toppin's season-ending injury. As Texas Tech goes through its final run, keep an eye on their performance, as they may be in for a large drop if they clearly are worse without Toppin.

Here's a fun fact: There is one team that owns three victories over current Top 5 teams. Any guesses? Well, if you're reading this, you probably already know: it's Texas Tech!

The Red Raiders, despite having almost no bench (360th in bench minutes played), have taken down Houston at home, Duke on a neutral court, and most recently, Arizona on the road. No team in college basketball, not even Michigan, can boast a more impressive top 3 wins.

As Selection Sunday nears, these big wins stand out considerably compared to other resumes. Wisconsin added a road win over Illinois and a home win over Michigan St to their already enourmous road win over Michigan. Even with only decent metrics, Wisconsin has risen from the bubble to a safely in team. 

These last few weeks will provide many a large win opportunity. Who will take it, that is the question?

Bracketology - 2/9/2026

At this point in time, I, like everyone else, would like to highlight the curious case of Miami (OH).

The Redhawks have a bizarre resume. Their predictive metrics are all in the 80s, and their SOS is an abysmal 349th in the country (out of 365). Even with their decent resume metrics (25 in SOR and 34 in WAB), they seem to be toeing the line. But of course, their L column still contains only a 0, which is remarkable.

So where would they be placed? There is slight precedent, though not a ton. The best case in the last 15 seasons would be 2011-12 Murray State. Playing in the terrible OVC that season, Murray State finished 30-1 against a very soft schedule and received a 6 seed. Of course, their SOS was a little better and their metrics were much better (mid-30s), so it's not quite an apples to apples comparison. But the committee will reward teams that emerge mostly unscathed from bad schedules, as winning most every game is quite difficult.

Of course, Miami (OH) has a long way to go. And the simplest thing they can do is go 34-0, win the MAC, and make this all moot.

Bracketology - 2/2/2-26

As the calendar turns to February, bracketology now begins to take focus. Every team has played at least 20 games, and there is real substance to analyze rather than just predictions.

Last year we saw an incredibly strong bracket at the top, with all four 1 seeds having Efficiency Margins above +35. This season thus far, it looks to be even stronger, with an astonishing 10 teams having EMs above +30 (for comparison's sake, 2023 had 0). This season is one of giants, and it results in many teams having 1 seed worthy resumes thus far but being knocked down to the 2 line.

As February progresses, teams at the top will take hits and losses, and the contenders will show themselves. Although it is unlikely that will have as obvious of a Top 4 as last season, there will be a clear upper echelon of squads that will be disappointed if they don't make deep runs in March. The basketball should be crazy fun.

It took until Friday, but we finally have a confirmed bid thief. The Mountain West title game will be be between Boise St and Colorado St, two teams that would not be in without the auto-bid. It adds an element of chaos to an already muddy bubble. All the bubble teams are done, and it will lead to a very contentious selection committee room this weekend. Who will get in? Bracketology - 3/14/2025

While there is much in terms of bracket implications today, I want to focus instead on the war of attrition, and how unfair March can be to players.

Yesterday, as Duke's Cooper Flagg crumpled to the floor holding his ankle, it was an echo to 25 years ago, when #1 Cincinnati's Kenyon Martin, the NPOY, broke his leg in the C-USA quarterfinal. That Cincinnati team never recovered, and an incredible season for the Bearcats came to a dispiriting end in the NCAA second round.

Fortunately, it turned out Flagg only sprained his anke, so he will play again this season. But he was not the only casualty of yesterday. His teammate, Maliq Brown, re-dislocated his shoulder. Elsewhere in the ACC, Clemson G Dillon Hunter, the super sixth man for the Tigers, broke his hand and is out for the season. In the SEC, Missouri F Mark Mitchell and Kentucky G Lamont Butler did not return to their games after injuries.

It is a part of March that is unavoidable, but still incredibly painful. Players working so hard during the season, only to be deprived of playing in March is a cruel fate, and one that is heartbreaking to see every season. So while watching the games, hope for great endings, amazing performances, but root for their health too. It's not to be taken for granted.

 These first few days of championship week have been tremendously fun. We've already seen a 16-17 team punch their ticket, we've seen bubbles pop, some very fun games, and one of the most baffling accidentally made free throws of all time.

But it was all an appetizer. These next four days are the best four days of the college basketball calendar, aside from the NCAA First Round days. The sheer quality and quantity of basketball heading our way is incredible, and should be fully celebrated. As conference tournaments get underway, it's important to identify who the best Cinderellas are and which conference tournaments have them. Specifically, which conference tournaments do we want the favorite to win?

I love a chaotic conference tournament season as much as the next guy. But the more chaos there is among the conference tournies, the weaker the auto-bid seeds are. As a result, there's usually a chalkier NCAA tournament. On the flip side, the more favorites win, the stronger the auto-bids, and the more upsets there are.

So while it is always fun to see a surprise 12-21 team in the conference championship game, if you want a more chaotic NCAA bracket, root for the Drakes, the UC-San Diegos, and the High Points of the country. (Of course, in 2018, 12 seed Vermont was stunned in their conference title game and got replaced by 16 seed UMBC, and that ended up working out, to say the least. So, you never know).

Well, it is that time again. March is officially here, and every game is significant.

The beauty of March is that every team (that qualifies for their conference tourney and is not inelgible for the NCAA tournament) has a chance to make the NCAA Tournament. We have already seen the Atlantic Sun Tournament tip off, and several more conferences will commence postseason festivities, with five tickets being punched by the end of this upcoming weekend.

It taps into what we love about the madness. Most every team, no matter how the season went, has a shot at March glory. We saw several teams catch absolute fire last season, most famously NC State going from 10th in the ACC to the Final Four in nine games. We could see something similar, and we have no clue who.

So sit back, and enjoy all the madness of this beautiful month.

We have one day to go before the beginning of March. Amid all the excitement, teams are nailing down their tournament resumes, and several teams are trying to solidify weak resumes at the right time.

As teams play their final games, it's important to note that all games are created equal. The games in March are worth the same amount as the games in November, and it's impossible to expunge losses from early in the season. Now teams can still add the huge wins to make things easier (just ask Georgia), but ultimately, teams are adding only about 10-15% to their resumes in this month. Most everything is settled.

So when a commentator yells after a game 'Team A has punched their ticket!", take it with a grain of salt. Unless it's a conference championship game.
